Challenge your mind and body to sharpen your thinking skills

Everybody has the ability to learn how to sharpen one’s thinking skills. For sure, it is not innate.

It is all about using your body and mind. Below are some practices, which I believe that it will also help you in your thinking skills. As far as I understand it is about solving problems, making decisions, asking questions, evaluating ideas, organising information and creating objects.

  1. Exercise. Mind and body are intertwined. Physical activity or exercise can increase the functioning of the brain. You will find a significant improvement in your thinking abilities such as problem solving and reasoning skills.
  2. Learn a language even if you do it slowly. It takes years for an adult to master a second language. It means that one can’t learn a language without activating many parts of your brain. Engagement in various parts of the brain helps create connections between brain areas and leads to higher mental functioning.
  3. Use both hands. An insight based on brain-based learning research says that using both hands equally makes you become a lateral thinker or out-of-box thinker, balancing your creative and logical thinking. It can be writing, combing your hair, or any day-to-day activity using your non-dominant hand initially and both hands eventually.
  4. Learn a new skill or hobby. Like learning a new language, learning something new enriches your brain network and keeps your brain active which in turn helps you take up more challenges like quick reaction or speed performance.
  5. Practice mediation. Focussing your mind for a period of time on an object at least for 30 mins, say between 6 am and 7 am, helps you achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state.
  6. Practice mindfulness, focussing one’s awareness on the present moment no matter in which state you are in, lays a stable state of mind which prepares you for challenges.
  7. Work on puzzles. Doing it every day sharpens your mind’s processing speed.
  8. Try origami, the Japanese art of folding paper. It is not necessary that you have to achieve something here. But, this habit of folding paper meaningfully enhances logical and sequential thinking, which means you are going to achieve great organisational skills.
  9. Ofcourse, let’s not forget drawing. It is the most effective way of improving visualisation. You use your senses to get information, your thoughts for processing the information and re-create it in your style, which would be a real challenge if you are new to drawing.
  10. Some specific Indian traditional games or any hand-eye coordination activity can nurture your creativity.
  11. Challenging is all about presenting your mind open for making more neural connections. It can be anything in your routine.
  12. Manage the unmanageable, anything for that matter; for example, people with higher cognitive skills. Interacting and getting along with them will challenge you as you need to workout your brain to match theirs.
  13. Use all your senses, which increases your perception skills for great decisions.
